The modern LED industry is becoming a land of giants. Leading manufacturers boast more than 100 MOCVD tools for laying down the epitaxial semiconductor films where devices emit light. But size is just one attribute that helps LED makers get products on shop shelves that can compete with mainstream lighting technology. As they learn how to build this momentum they’re also adapting in order to drive their devices further into homes and businesses worldwide than ever before.

That adaptation involves LED makers increasingly broadening their focus beyond just pushing performance metrics further, according to Eric Virey, senior analyst at Yole Développement. “Once luminous efficacy reached a threshold that made LEDs competitive in many applications the talk was about $/lm,” he said. “Now most LED makers have performance and cost that enables them to produce credible products. Many second tier manufacturers can even reach 100 lm/W and this is good enough for certain applications.”
