Steady growth and technology inflections open opportunities for medical image sensors
CMOS and emerging technologies will help drive sales of image sensors for x-ray equipment and endoscopes to $100 million by 2017.

Demand for image sensors for medical applications will see steady 9% growth, to pass the $100 million mark by 2017. The main growth driver is the increasing demand  for medical treatment by an aging population in developed markets, and by growing wealth in  emerging regions. But new technologies are also enabling new applications that will create new  opportunities and spur growth, from disposable  endoscopes and pill cameras in the endoscopy  market, to 3D imaging and even single-photon  sensing on the x-ray side.

Most of the biomedical image sensor market is large sensors for x-ray applications, which accountfor some 90% of total sector revenues, primarily relatively high value CCDs and amorphous siliconpanels. But CMOS image sensors are gaining share, thanks in part to the fast improvement of the technology and the ready availability of product driven by consumer applications.
