Unity Opto, Formosa Epitaxy lower 2010 predictions
LED chip packaging firm Unity Opto Technology posted August revenues that were down 4.6 percent sequentially but the revenues were up 58 percent on year to NT$670 million (US$20.979 million).
Revenues from January through August totaled NT$4.62 billion, exceeding the NT$4 billion for the entire 2009. Unity Opto cited inventory adjustments by panel makers and retailers to lower inventory of CCFL panels and CCFL TVs as the main reason for the monthly decline, according to a Digitimes article.
The decline in august and slower than normal third quarter apparently lead Unity Opto to lower its projected proportion of LCD TV shipment volumes for LED-backlit models in 2010 from 30 percent to 15 to 20 percent. Formosa Epitaxy also suffered from a slower than expected third quarter and decided to adjust the company's projected proportion of the global LCD TV shipment volume for LED backlit models from 30 percent orginally down to 20 to 25 percent, according to another Digitimes article.
Formosa Epitaxy chairman Chien Fen-ren noted that the company has lowered the estimation for LED-backlit TVs' market share in 2010 after Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics lowered LED orders amid high inventory levels in the market. In the article, both Unity Opto and Formosa Epitaxy are more optimistic about 2011 sales of LED backlit modules with the companies predicting 40 percent and 50 percent share of the global market respectively.
