Electric vehicles drive packaging innovation
 
Power module designs and industry manufacturing dynamics are set to change as millions of electric and hybrid electric vehicles roll out in coming years, says Yole Développement’s Alexandre Avron.

With hybrid cars paying off for Toyota in 2012, most other car makers are still struggling some way behind them on the road to electrification. But no matter how hard the going, the journey is now underway – and is set to drive improvements in power electronics packaging that will eventually reach all markets. “Hybrid and electric cars are expected to be a very big market, with tens of millions set to be sold in the next 15-20 years,” underlined Yole Développement market analyst Alexandre Avron. This demand brings urgency to power electronic packaging development that previously wasn’t present. And leading module makers, like Germany’s Infineon, Danfoss and Semikron, Japan’s Fuji Electronics, are adapting to meet it.
