Eastern winds dominate evolving industry
The highly competitive Chinese wind turbine market the world’s most important, though offshore installations also offer a fast-growing alternative in developed countries, explain Yole Développement analysts Alexandre Avron and Wenbin Ding.
In February 2012, the high stakes being played for in the wind power industry made it a talking point for a former US presidential candidate and China’s president-in-waiting. Senator John Kerry planned to raise a billion-dollar dispute between Devens, Massachusetts, based American Superconductor Corp (AMSC) and Beijing’s Sinovel during Chinese vice-president Xi Jinping’s US visit. While Kerry sought to tackle trade secret theft generally, the political interest underlines the current severity of competition in the wind power industry. And as the sector becomes increasingly defined by Chinese demand, the companies trading in it are racing to prepare themselves for the challenges that brings.
