Was the thematic priority “Nano-technologies and nano-sciences, knowledge-based multifunctional materials, and new production processes and devices” (NMP) of the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) successful in the context of the objectives of the Lisbon Agenda and the European Research Area?

What was its impact vis-à-vis the general policy objectives of FP6 and specific objectives of NMP? This study evaluates the strategic value and impact of thematic priority NMP in FP6 in its wider European and international context, concluding that the programme has made a strategic impact, but no revolution.

The evaluators found that the objectives of the FP6 NMP programme have been reached to varying degrees. Excellent and new knowledge was produced and strengthened (but not first class knowledge). Critical mass was built up, shifts in research achieved and career and mobility opportunities for researchers created. Environmental sustainability was also stimulated. Involvement of SMEs remained a bottleneck and commercialisation of research results was less important than progress in science.
