Fabless wireless startups expect to crack tough mobile market
 
Although the big IDMs have captured most of the MEMS business for smart phones, fabless wireless MEMS startups can break into the mobile business by offering unique solutions.

Though much of the innovation in MEMS has traditionally come from startups, it’s a real challenge for a small company to sell an unfamiliar new technology to a giant OEM, who expects an absolutely assured supply of huge
volumes at minimum prices right from the start. It’s the big MEMS IDMs who have in fact captured most of the MEMS business from the smart phone market so far. But fabless wireless MEMS startups Wispry, SiTime, and Sand9 say they are on the verge of breaking into the big mobile market, thanks largely to offering unique solutions to some
real wireless problems, but also thanks to the growing maturity of the MEMS industry, that now has both a volume production infrastructure and a general familiarity and comfort level among users.
