Investors put money on GaN’s billion-dollar promise
Even though power device makers are still in the early stages of commercialisation, their long term potential has attracted at least $88 million in funding since 2009, highlights Yole Développement’s Philippe Roussel.
Consumer, lighting and IT products could drive demand for power electronic devices made from GaN to reach $1 billion much more rapidly than previously predicted. So says Philippe Roussel, senior manager of the compound semiconductors business unit at market analyst Yole Développement. He has much higher confidence in how applicable GaN is in that segment after researching the latest revision of the company’s Power GaN: Market & Technology Analysis report. In particular, two pioneering GaN device vendors, El Segundo, California’s International Rectifier and EPC Corp, say their customers are finding the efficiency their products bring are well suited to such applications.
