LED industry pursues divergent lighting paths
 
While Cree, Osram Opto Semiconductors, Philips Lumileds, Seoul Semiconductor, and Toyoda Gosei all agree on the importance of the general illumination market, their approaches to driving adoption differ, Andy Extance finds.

2011 posed two big challenges for the LED industry. One came thanks to increased competition from relatively newly-established and heavily governmentbacked Chinese LED companies. The second came because the demand for LEDs to backlight LCD televisions was less than generally expected. “It was surprising how quickly LED TV backlighting has peaked and increased the overcapacities in the marketplace, leading to very aggressive price declines driven by competitors who scrambled to fill their lines,” commented Aldo Kamper, chief executive officer of Regensburg, Germany's Osram Opto Semiconductors.
