Mature power electronic capacitor market chases opportunities
Even as a well-established technology, film capacitors are playing a growing part in the power electronics market, explain Yole Développement’s Alexandre Avron and Wenbin Ding , while ‘supercapacitors’ role in a hybrid vehicle in the Le Mans 24 hour race underline their potential.
Two conductors are separated by a dielectric: when a voltage is passed across them, positive charges collect on one, and negative charges collect on the other under the infl uence of a static electric fi eld. That electrostatic field stores energy. This ability of capacitors has been exploited for over 250 years, and the industry that manufactures them is almost as well established. The main capacitor types enable well-understood, low-cost products for which the major business opportunity comes in utting costs even further.
