Despite mounting pressures from Silicon and GaN, Sapphire has so far remained the substrate of choice for the manufacturing of high brightness LEDs. Excited by the fast growth of Solid State Lighting, many new entrants have rushed into the opportunity and built up excessive amount of capacity. Now, most are in a dire straight, with idled capacity and struggling to enter the LED or Silicon On Sapphire supply chain and maintaining margins afloat in a depressed pricing environment.

The main advantage of GaN on GaN (Gallium Nitride on Gallium Nitride) LED material is that it allows reliable operation at very high current densities. It has much fewer defects than conventional LEDs, which have GaN layers on cheaper foreign substrates like sapphire, silicon carbide, or silicon. System Plus Consulting has performed a reverse costing analysis of a Soraa LED in order to estimate its manufacturing cost. A “Reverse Costing” report includes technological data and economical calculations. Based on the teardown of a sample, it provides detailed information on the process involved, the materials and dimensions. A process flow is extracted from these observations, completed with publicly available data, and simulated using a cost simulation tool. Multiple results are obtained, from cost per step to yield influence.
