General lighting application will be the next and largest market ever for LED light sources. However, for most applications, LEDs are still too expensive. The industry consensus points toward the need for an additional 8x to 10x reduction in packaged LED cost of ownership expressed in $/lumen within the next 4-5 years in order to compete broadly with incumbent technologies and enable massive adoption in most lighting application segments. At the luminaire level, the packaged LED still represents a large fraction of the total cost and is critical to performance and reliability. At the LED device level, the packaging currently represents 25-55% of the total cost depending on the design and the various IP licensing agreements.
