From Sapphire wafers to Luminaires : is the overall LED value chain ready for Lighting?
Dr. Philippe Roussel, Senior Project Manager, Compound Semiconductors, LED, Power Electronics & Photovoltaics, Yole Développement

General lighting application will be the next and largest market ever for LED light sources. However, for most applications, LEDs are still too expensive. The industry consensus points toward the need for an additional 8x to 10x reduction in packaged LED cost of ownership expressed in $/lumen within the next 4-5 years in order to compete broadly with incumbent technologies and enable massive adoption in most lighting application segments. At the luminaire level, the packaged LED still represents a large fraction of the total cost and is critical to performance and reliability. At the LED device level, the packaging currently represents 25-55% of the total cost depending on the design and the various IP licensing agreements.

“LED Lighting, the Road ahead: beyond efficacy enhancements, GaN on Silicon will drive led costs to enable led adoption in general lighting”
Daniel Cazuc, Southern Europe Sales director, Bridgelux

Bridgelux is a leading developer and manufacturer of technologies and solutions transforming the $40 billion global lighting industry into a $100 billion market opportunity.  Based in Livermore, California, Bridgelux is a pioneer in solid-state lighting (SSL), expanding the market for light-emitting diode (LED) technologies by driving down the cost of LED lighting systems.  Bridgelux’s patented light source technology replaces traditional technologies (such as incandescent, halogen, fluorescent and high intensity discharge lighting) with integrated, solid-state lighting solutions that enable lamp and lighting manufacturers to provide high performance and energy-efficient white light for the rapidly growing interior and exterior lighting markets, including street lights, commercial lighting and consumer applications.  With more than 500 patent applications filed or granted worldwide, Bridgelux is the only vertically integrated LED manufacturer and developer of solid-state light sources that designs its solutions specifically for the lighting industry.  For more information about the company, please visit www.bridgelux.com

The LED Market Briefing will highlight how LED industry is ready to address these challenges all over the value-chain. Detailed program will be available first week of November.
