Supercurrent through an atome
A supercurrent can pass through a contact formed by a single atom between two superconducting electrodes.
A spectroscopy experiment, conducted by the Department of Physics of the condensed state (CEA / CNRS), highlighted electronic quantum states that carry the supercurrent.The experience of a generic scope for superconducting electronics, is described in the journal Nature on July 18.
Fig 1: The contact to a single atom (red in the figure) is included in a loop, in aluminum, superconducting during the experiment carried out at 30 mK. A second conventional Josephson junction (single tunnel junction, in yellow) allows the spectroscopic measurement of Andreev states.
