The light quantity of the LED package does not decrease as much as normal white LEDs using a resin material. Toyoda Gosei expects that it will be used in tough environments such as with industrial equipment.

Gold (Au) bumps are formed on a ceramic board. Then, blue LED chips are mounted on it. And the entire blue LED chips are packaged with an inorganic glass material containing a yellow fluorescent material. Because the LED uses only inorganic materials, it has high reliability, the company said. Its commercialization date has not been determined yet.

This time, Toyoda Gosei disclosed packages equipped with one, three, nine, 24, 36 and 72 blue LED chips. The dimensions of the packages mounted with one chip and 36 chips are 1.1 x 1.1mm and 4.5 x4.5mm, respectively. The thickness is 0.95mm.

Because of the size of the mold used to package with an inorganic glass material, it is currently difficult to make a larger package. Though the brightness of the white LED has not been disclosed, it is several percent lower than that of commonly-used white LEDs packaged with a resin material.

Sumita Optical Glass Inc exhibited a white LED packaged with a glass material at CEATEC JAPAN 2008, an exhibition that took place in October 2008 in Japan. The white LED showcased at that time was co-developed with Toyoda Gosei.
