The CMOS image sensors market is dynamic, with multiple applications mostly concentrated on mobile phones. However, even though mobile phones accounted for ~ 65% of total shipments in 2011, several new applications are poised to drive future market growth.  In particular, three fast-emerging applications of significant size should drive market growth to an expected CAGR over 30%:  tablets, automotive and smart TVs.

From a technological standpoint, the CMOS image sensors industry is exceptionally innovative. For example, three years after its introduction by Sony and Omnivision, BSI technology is still limited to a small number of players -- but BSI image sensors have already accounted for 25% of total CIS sales in 2012. What’s more, the rapid adoption of BSI technology is expected to reach more than 70% by 2017.

In the future, other high-potential technologies could quickly reshape the imaging industry -- namely 3D Time-of-Flight imaging, computational imaging, quantum dot film, single photon counting and stacked sensor architecture.

All of these technological innovations and market opportunities have a strong impact on the strategic decisions of CIS-related companies – and as the CMOS image sensors market continues to grow, a clear duality has developed between companies that have adopted a growth strategy focused on low-end markets, and companies opting for specialization in high-end and higher-margin markets.
