With a $1.08 million contract award from the United States Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC), a collaborative organization of FCA US, Ford Motor Company, and General Motors, a materials engineering research team at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) will extend development of its novel process to recycle spent lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries and produce new cathode materials that are increasingly being adopted by automotive battery makers to reduce cost and increase energy density.

Volkswagen intends to sell electric cars for less than 20,000 euros ($22,836) and protect German jobs by converting three factories to make Tesla rivals, a source familiar with the plans said. VW and other carmakers are struggling to adapt quickly enough to stringent rules introduced after the carmaker was found to have cheated diesel emissions tests, with its chief executive Herbert Diess warning last month that Germany’s auto industry faces extinction.

· From 2019 onwards the volume production of batteries for the fully electric Mercedes-Benz EQC (combined power consumption: 22.2 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km, provisional figures)[1] will start.

Iberdrola and IKEA have signed a cooperation agreement to promote sustainable mobility, under which the energy company will install over 50 e-vehicle charging stations and supply 100% renewable energy to the stores, logistics centres and corporate buildings of the decoration company in Spain in 2019.With the aim of improving the daily lives of a majority of people, IKEA will offer free electric vehicle charging to all its customers. The stores in Málaga, Badalona and Zaragoza will be the first to have this equipment.

Kia Motors and Hyundai Motor have announced plans to introduce ‘solar roof’ charging technology on selected Hyundai Motor vehicles. Electricity-generating solar panels will be incorporated into the roof or the hood of vehicles, and will support internal combustion, hybrid and battery electric vehicles with additional electrical power, increasing fuel efficiency and range.
