"Volume saturation, price pressure and a shifting intellectual property landscape are forcing the LED phosphor & QDs industry into a rationalization phase,” announces Dr. Eric Virey, Senior Technology & Market Analyst, Yole Développement (Yole). Therefore, in this environment, Yole is expecting further rationalization of the industry landscape with tier 2 and 3 companies exiting the business. Most of those companies do not have any elements of differentiation, be it on performance or manufacturing cost that could allow them to survive in the mid and long term. For most phosphor suppliers, the name of the game is to keep decreasing costs as volume increase and revenue remain essentially flat.

The consortium brings together LED makers, quantum dot material suppliers, and IC design houses. EOSRL intends to use the panels for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) devices through work with local and international vendors. EOSRL plans to set up a pilot production line of micro LED panels not including the production of epitaxial wafers for about US $6.6 million.

BOE Technology Group, a supplier of display products and solutions, on Thursday commenced mass production of active-matrix organic light-emitting diode display screens ahead of schedule at its facility in Chengdu, Sichuan province.The Chinese company said that the sixth-generation flexible AMOLED display panels have already been delivered to more than 10 smartphone manufacturers including Huawei Technologies Co, OPPO Electronics Corp, Vivo Mobile Communication Technology, Xiaomi Corp, ZTE Corp and Nubia Technology.

Veeco Instruments has transferred Allos Semiconductor's epitaxy technology onto its Propel Single-Wafer MOCVD system to enable micro LED production on existing silicon production lines.

Veritas Capital has agreed to sell Excelitas Technologies to AEA Investors after seven years in its portfolio. Financial details of the deal were not revealed, although reports earlier this year suggested Veritas could exit the business through a sale or IPO valuing it at up to $2bn.
