Treatment targets area of brain linked to problem-solving, decision-making, judgment While most treatments for Alzheimer’s disease focus on improving memory, researchers at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center conducted a study aimed at slowing the decline of problem solving and decision-making skills in these patients. Thin electrical wires were surgically implanted into the frontal lobes of the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease to determine if using a brain pacemaker could improve cognitive, behavioral, and functional abilities in patients with this form of dementia.

Roche reported that its 2017 diagnostics revenues grew 5 percent year over year, driven by strength in immunodiagnostic product sales within its centralized and point-of-care solutions business. For the year ended Dec. 31, Roche's Diagnostics division reported revenues of CHF 12.08 billion ($12.93 billion), up from CHF 11.47 billion in the prior year. The diagnostics division reported fourth quarter revenues of CHF 3.28 billion, up 4 percent from CHF 3.11 billion in Q4 2016.

Varian Medical Systems announced it has signed an agreement to acquire all the outstanding shares of Sirtex Medical Limited (ASX: SRX) ("Sirtex"), an Australia-based global life sciences company focused on interventional oncology therapies, that is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange, for A$28 per share in cash. On a fully diluted basis, this represents a total equity purchase price for the acquisition of approximately A$1,585M (approximately US$1,283M as of the date of this release).

Qiagen said after the close of the market that its fourth quarter revenues grew 8 percent year over year as the firm beat analysts' consensus estimates on the top and bottom lines. Separately, Qiagen announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Stat-Dx, a Barcelona-based developer of multiplex infectious disease diagnostics, for up to approximately $191 million. The company also announced a new commitment to return $200 million to shareholders via open-market repurchases.
