Sony DADC and OPKO Diagnostics enter into a supply agreement for high-volume manufacturing of components for the OPKO Sangia™ microfluidic test cassette.

OPKO Diagnostics, a division of OPKO Health, Inc., and Sony DADC announced the signing of a supply agreement for high volume production of a key component of the OPKO Sangia™ microfluidic cassette. The Sangia cassettes are designed to perform quantitative immunoassays from a finger-stick blood sample on the Claros®1 in-office analyzer. The test results are reported in the physician’s office in 10 minutes. The first two OPKO Sangia tests are for total prostate specific antigen (Total PSA) and Total Testosterone.

GE Ventures support RainDance's vision to make liquid biopsy a commercial reality.

RainDance Technologies, Inc., an innovative genomics tools company making molecular testing of complex diseases more standardized and readily available, announced that it has closed a $16.5 million Series E financing round extension. New investors include GE Ventures and Northgate Capital; all existing financial investors also participated in this round of financing.

Eveon and CEA-Leti announced the demonstration of liquid-pumping for smart drug delivery in the bolus mode using a silicon-based micro-pump fabricated with a standard MEMS process.

The milestone is the first functional micro-pump integration using MEMS standard process on Leti’s 200mm line. It is a result of FluMin3, Eveon and Leti’s three-year joint-development project to produce an automatic drug-delivery system integrating a MEMS micro-pump that reduces patient discomfort by delivering medicine with very high accuracy, minimal loss and high flow rates. Holst Centre and imec have unveiled a prototype flexible health patch weighing just 10g – half the weight of current products.

The patch uses real-time electrocardiogram (ECG), tissue-contact impedance and accelerometer information to accurately monitor physical activity. Thanks to advanced system in package (SiP) technology from SHINKO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES CO., LTD., the electronics module measures less than two by two centimeters.The high accuracy algorithms, low power consumption, and small size and weight make it ideal for consumer applications.

Dolomite have announced the winner of their 2013 Productizing Science competition as Molbot Pte. Ltd.

The company submitted the concept of a low-cost bench-top molecular biology “Minilab” for automating molecular biology applications.

Dolomite’s Productizing Science Competition seeks to find innovative microfluidic concepts and give the winner the chance to develop theirs into a commercially successful product and share in the rewards. Molbot’s molecular biology workstation Minilab will utilize microfluidic technology to take traditional sequential manipulations such as PCR assembly, thermal cycling, analysis and purification and perform them ‘on chip’ in an automated way. The concept is to integrate traditional ‘stand-alone’ systems such as imaging, PCR, centrifuge, electrophoresis and pipetting and combine them into one automated system.
