Power Electronics

In its latest analysis, Power Integrated Circuit 2017 - Quarterly Update, Yole Développement forecasts Power ICs will benefit from multiple key end markets to deliver a 3.6% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2016-2022, in line with the general health of the overall semiconductor industry. The power IC market revenue, which was estimated to have been $14.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2016, which is forecast to reach $18 billion U.S. dollars in the year 2022.

For the first time, Yole Développement provides the consolidated tracking information for five major end markets related to power IC and provide quarterly forecasts from Q1-2017 to Q4-2018. Also, Power IC Update provides component growth rate and forecast information for all the major components in the power ICs Market. Both unit shipment and total revenues are provided for the all the component.
We interviewed Jonathan Liao, Senior Analyst & Business Development Manager at Yole Développement (Yole) about this new service.

Jonathan, can you explain the content of the new product from Yole Développement?

Yes, the contents are focused on components utilized in the lower voltage power management semiconductors, namely the power Integrated Circuits (ICs). The main product categories are regulators, voltage reference, voltage supervisors, multi-channels Power Management ICs (PMICs), and other analog ICs utilize in the conversion, distribution, and management of power in an application.
Not only are the components covered, we also layout a details market segment data by examining over 40 end markets within the five major markets such as automotive, computing, consumer, communications, and industrial. In the quarterly, we will provide both quarterly forecast for the next eight quarters and annual forecast for year 2017-2022 on the component level with a breakdown of end markets. Additionally, we will also provide the market share annually for these components once a year. All the data are layout in easy to use pivot tables delivered in Excel format with numerous static tables for additional analysis. It is quite a new product for Yole Développement (Yole) moving to a quarterly analysis and keep customer updated on the market.

What is the coverage of the market data included into the new product?

The market data included into the new products are very detailed. For example, for the automotive end market, we breakdown the applications further. Such as Infotainment, Power Train, Body & convenience, ADAS, and other safety. For the consumer end market, there are 12 applications we keep track of. We aim to use this product to help our customers keep track of the components and their target end markets on a quarterly basis. There are total of 43 end markets in the update with over 10 major components, for each of the end markets and component, customer will be able to view the detail number of shipment units, and revenues. For example, if a customer is interested in the total units of voltage regulators shipped into the ADAS segment, he can easily modify the excel table to get to that level of details quickly.

What will be the frequency of update of this information and database?

The target update frequency is once per quarter. We are using this product as the update to examine the overall health of the power semiconductor market. Both the end market and forecasts are updated quarterly, while the market share will be updated once a year during the first quarter of the year.

I understand that you have also included the estimation of the market shares for the major TOP20 power device makers, can you tell us more?

Absolutely. The top 20 players in the power IC market will be provided on an annual basis after the conclusion of the calendar year. Besides the overall market share, we will also provide the component market share wherever applicable. For example, our customer will have access to the top suppliers in linear regulators, in switching regulators, and all the other components we covered in the Power IC quarterly update. The following companies are analyze on a quarterly basis: Alpha and Omega Semiconductor, Analog Devices, Dialog Semiconductor, Diodes, Fuji Electric, Infineon Technologies, Intersil, IXYS, Linear Technology, Lite-On Semiconductor, MagnaChip, Maxim Integrated, MediaTek, Microchip, Microsemi, Monolithic Power Systems, NXP, ON Semiconductor, Panasonic Corporation, Power Integrations, Qualcomm, Renesas Electronics Corporation, Ricoh, ROHM Semiconductor, Samsung, Sanken Electric Company, Semtech, Shindengen, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments, Toshiba, and Vishay Intertechnology.

Who could be interested to purchase this product?

The main targeted customers are those in industry who needs a comprehensive understanding of the power IC market. Customers in the roles of marketing, business development, strategy planning, procurement, and sales can all benefit from the quarterly update. This product will help them to address some key issues such as developing the right products for high growth areas, targeting the correct end applications to maximize sales, and understanding their market positions.

The data included into the database is very detailed, can you explain us the methodology you are using to collect the data and check it?

Of course. The database combined both primary research and secondary research results. From the primary research standpoint, analysts from Yole attend every major trade shows and gathering firsthand information regarding new product introductions and technology development. Additionally, Yole’s extensive contact and network allow us to regularly conduct interviews with people in the industry to gain insights into the markets we cover. From the secondary research, we combine sales data from WSTS, device teardowns, unit shipment, financial releases, and earning statements from all the companies we cover to craft the most accurate database.

This is new for Yole to provide such market data centric product and database, is it a new strategy for Yole?

Yole has been covering the power semiconductor industry for a long time. Besides power semiconductor, Yole also covers photonics, automotive, medical technologies, LEDs, Battery management, and many other areas. We aim to utilize all the internal expertise and market analytic capability and knowledge to create useable products for our customers. Power management IC is the first quarterly update Yole created to provide a comprehensive overview of the power market, but you can expect more to come from other areas of coverage from Yole.

What are you expected as key subjects to look at in the next months?

The market is evolving very quickly. Recently the key markets have been automotive and industrial end market. In the automotive end market, self-driving cars, electric/hybrid vehicles, and higher voltage drive trains are the focus of the industry.
